Ethiopia: East Africa wins big in race for #AU top seat The African Union Executive Council has made a decisive move, determining that the next chairman of the African Union Commission (#AUC) will hail from the Eastern Africa region. This decision, announced in a statement on Friday, 15 March, 2025, stipulates that the East #Africa region exclusively presents candidates for the esteemed position. Currently, two candidates from the region have expressed interest in the role: Raila Odinga, the opposition leader of #Kenya, and Fawzia Adam, #Somalia‘s former Foreign Affairs Minister. Moreover, the decision designates the Northern Africa region to nominate candidates for the Deputy Chairperson position, while the Central, Southern, and Western regions will vie for the six commissioner positions. Kenyan authorities have affirmed their commitment to collaborate closely within the Eastern Africa region, comprising 14 member states, to garner support for their candidate. The imminent vacancy in the AUC chairperson position arises as Chad’s Moussa Faki, the incumbent, concludes his two-term tenure. Elections are slated for February 2025. The campaign to succeed Moussa Faki as the AUC chairperson is poised to kick off officially once all interested candidates submit their applications by May of this year. the-star.co.ke/news/realtime/
