Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is expected in Somaliland this week.
Reports from Addis Ababa indicate that Prime Minister Ahmed will visit Somaliland’s Berbera Port.
The visit will be part of his efforts to consolidate the deal Ethiopia signed with Somaliland earlier this month.
Ethiopia and Somaliland signed an agreement on January 1, 2024.
The agreement gives Ethiopia direct control over one of Somaliland’s largest seaports while it recognizes the latter as an independent state.
A delegation of senior Ethiopian government officials arrive in Hargeisa on Monday to prepare for the impending visit.
Prime Minister Ahmed’s visit will be the first by a sitting head of state to Somaliland.
