High-level #Ethiopian delegation studies drug regulation in #India with World Bank support

A high-level Ethiopian delegation of drug regulatory policymakers, backed by the World Bank, has concluded a study tour to #Hyderabad, India, aimed at strengthening Ethiopia’s pharmaceutical regulatory system.

The visit focused on learning from the Drug Control Administration (#DCA) of #Telangana state, whose regulatory framework has drawn international recognition. The tour was reported by Pharmabiz, a portal covering India’s pharmaceuticals industry.

According to the report, Ethiopian officials sought practical experience and policy guidance that could support efforts to improve national systems and ensure access to quality medicines in Ethiopia.

The delegation said the visit offered “invaluable” exposure to operational practices, particularly in regulatory enforcement, quality monitoring and oversight of the pharmaceutical supply chain. They also indicated they intend to adapt relevant lessons to Ethiopia’s context and implement similar regulatory frameworks.

The Ethiopian team included senior figures from key institutions involved in the country’s pharmaceutical and investment sectors: Zinabu Yirga Ayele, Deputy Commissioner of the Ethiopian Investment Commission (#EIC), and Solomon Abdella Muktar from the Ministry of Health. They were joined by officials from the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Procurement Services (EPPS) and the Industrial Parks Development Corporation.

While routine drug regulation in Ethiopia is carried out by the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA), the composition of the delegation reflected the role of broader national leadership in shaping policy, investment and supply chain integrity.

This, according to the report, underscores Ethiopia’s commitment to developing a stronger, more comprehensive drug regulatory system.

The mission was supported by the World Bank, represented by Senior Health Specialists Tseganah Amsalu Guracha and Amith Nagaraj, signaling international backing for Ethiopia’s efforts to enhance regulatory capacity in the pharmaceutical sector.
