The long-awaited peace process in Sanaag region has officially begun, as the first delegation from the Warsangeli community arrived today in Erigavo to take part in the reconciliation conference convened by the President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi “Irro.”

The peace conference follows last year’s conflict in December 2024, when some clans temporarily left the city after fighting broke out. Today marks the first major step toward restoring peace and unity in Erigavo and the wider Sanaag region.

The delegation, drawn from Badhan District in eastern Sanaag, was warmly received on the outskirts of Erigavo by the organizing committee of the peace conference, members of the National Peace Committee, and Sanaag regional authorities.

Prominent elders and traditional leaders leading the Warsangeli delegation included:

King Ibrahim Mohamed Hassan (Gacmayare)

Aqil Sharmarke Warsame Dalmar

Aqil Hussein Hassan (Karsay)

Elder Said Mahmoud Ismail

Aqil Abdiqani Qalbi

Elder Jama Salad

Aqil Abdi Aziz Qalib

Senior Aqil Jama Arab

The arrival of the Warsangeli delegation is seen as a breakthrough in confidence-building, showing strong willingness from local communities to resolve disputes through dialogue within the framework of the Somaliland Republic.

Officials in Erigavo stated that the reconciliation conference provides a critical platform for elders, traditional leaders, and government representatives to address grievances and chart a sustainable path for peace and stability in the region.

President Irro’s administration has emphasized inclusive dialogue and reconciliation, stressing that lasting peace in Sanaag is essential for national stability and unity.

Today’s milestone marks the beginning of a renewed effort to heal divisions and lay the foundation for long-term peace and development in Sanaag.
