Somaliland Diaspora: Avoiding Tribalism and Promoting National Development
By: Scholar Mohamed Farah Tahar, One of Somaliland’s elders
The Somaliland diaspora plays a vital role in the development of their homeland. Living in developed countries, they have the opportunity to promote modern thinking, transparency, and social cohesion. However, tribalism remains a significant challenge, sometimes undermining the diaspora’s contribution to national progress.
Challenges of Tribalism:
Tribalism is a social system based on clan or ethnic identity, often taking precedence over the common good. When diaspora members become involved in tribal conflicts, it can lead to social division, hinder investment, and delay development initiatives.
The Role of the Diaspora in Development:
The Somaliland diaspora can make a meaningful impact by:
• Investing in the economy: Supporting businesses, education, and healthcare projects.
• Encouraging innovation: Introducing modern skills and creative solutions to improve services.
• Raising awareness and leadership: Educating communities on good governance and social unity.
•
How the Diaspora Can Avoid Tribalism:
• Avoid participating in clan-based politics; prioritize competence and merit.
• Implement projects that unite the community and benefit everyone.
• Educate and raise awareness among youth and diaspora members about the importance of unity and national progress.
Responsibilities of the Diaspora:
Diaspora members should focus on: strengthening social cohesion, preventing clan-based conflicts, and encouraging youth to work for the country’s development rather than contributing to divisions.
Finally
The Somaliland diaspora is key to sustainable development. Working for the common good, promoting knowledge, and investing in the community are the most effective ways to bring meaningful change. Unity, awareness, and development should guide the diaspora to help Somaliland achieve lasting progress.
