
The Minister of Education and Science of Somaliland, Prof. Ismail Ducale Yusuf, today hosted a high-level delegation from the United Kingdom to discuss the ongoing drought’s devastating impact on the education sector.
The UK team was led by Chris Pycroft, Head of UK Development Projects, and included senior representatives from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), among them Nicola Murray, Head of Humanitarian Aid; Tatiana Fernandez, Head of the British Office in Hargeisa; and Abdirisaaq, a senior FCDO official.
The meeting focused on the urgent need to address the challenges the drought has posed to schools across Somaliland. Discussions explored ways to ensure uninterrupted learning, protect vulnerable students, and strengthen the overall education infrastructure.
Minister Yusuf expressed his appreciation for the UK’s continued support, describing the partnership as vital to maintaining educational progress during times of crisis.
The UK delegation reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Somaliland’s education system, pledging to prioritize programs that safeguard learning amid environmental and humanitarian shocks.
This engagement highlights the enduring cooperation between Somaliland and the UK, as both sides work together to build a more resilient and inclusive education system capable of withstanding the growing impact of climate-related crises.
