Somaliland, #Taiwan sign maritime security pact as visiting FM meets Taiwanese president, counterpart in first cabinet-level visit to Taipei
Taiwan President Lai Ching-te met on Thursday with a senior delegation from Somaliland led by Foreign Minister Abdirahman Dahir Adam, as the two partners signed a new maritime security agreement and reaffirmed their growing diplomatic partnership.
The coast guard cooperation agreement, signed in Taipei by Somaliland Coast Guard Commander Admiral Ahmed Hurre Hariye and Taiwan Coast Guard Administration Director-General Chang Chung-lung, aims to strengthen collaboration in maritime security, training, and joint exercises.
President Lai wrote on X: “With today’s coast guard agreement and expansion into areas like maritime security and blue economy, our nations are writing a new chapter in our partnership and showing the resilience of democratic alliances.”
Earlier, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said FM, Abdirahman Dahir Adam, and the Somaliland delegation met with Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lungin Taipei.
The visit is the first cabinet-level visit from Somaliland since the new government took office earlier this year.
FM Lin Chia-lung praised the visit as a testament to the “strength, resilience, and shared values” underpinning the relationship between the two sides. “His visit—the first by a cabinet minister since Somaliland’s new government took office—reflects the strength, resilience, and shared values of our democratic partnership,” Minister Lin said on X.
The visit comes as Taiwan and Somaliland deepen diplomatic and technical ties, building on their formal relationship.
The new agreements signal a shift toward broader cooperation, particularly in maritime security, a key area of engagement for both sides.
