SOMALILAND: ITS STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE IN THE RED SEA

PRESS STATEMENT AND POLITICAL PERSPECTIVE
SOMALILAND INTELLECTUAL ORGANISATION (SIO)

The Somaliland Intellectual Organisation (SIO) warmly welcomes the participation of Ambassador Bashir Goth, Somaliland’s Representative to the United States, at the 19th Annual ASMEA Conference, scheduled for 7–9 November 2026 in Washington, D.C.

We particularly welcome the important discussion entitled:

“Somaliland: The Overlooked Critical Component in the Red Sea Geopolitical Jigsaw.”

1. Recognition and Appreciation of Ambassador Bashir Goth

SIO commends Ambassador Bashir Goth for his diplomatic efforts to strengthen Somaliland’s international visibility and bring its strategic importance to the attention of American policymakers, diplomats, academics and influential institutions.

His participation represents a valuable opportunity to advance Somaliland’s diplomatic engagement and strengthen the international discussion surrounding its recognition.

2. Special Appreciation of Ambassador J. Peter Pham

SIO extends its sincere appreciation to Ambassador J. Peter Pham, a respected American diplomat, scholar and longstanding advocate for greater international recognition and understanding of Somaliland.

Ambassador Pham is no newcomer to Somaliland’s cause. Through his research, publications and policy discussions, he has consistently highlighted Somaliland’s distinctive history, democratic achievements, state-building experience and strategic significance.

We particularly commend him for:

– His longstanding commitment to raising international awareness of Somaliland.
– His valuable research on Somaliland’s statehood and the consequences of non-recognition.
– His contributions to American foreign policy discussions concerning Somaliland.
– His continued efforts to encourage informed debate about Somaliland’s future and its strategic role in the Horn of Africa.

SIO believes that international friends of Somaliland, such as Ambassador Peter Pham, deserve genuine appreciation and continued academic and diplomatic engagement.

3. SIO’s Perspective on the Conference Theme

SIO believes the discussion should highlight five strategic priorities:

1. Red Sea Security: Somaliland occupies an important geographical position along the Gulf of Aden, close to one of the world’s most significant maritime trade corridors.

2. Berbera Port: Berbera has the potential to become a major regional hub connecting African markets, the Middle East and international trade routes.

3. United States Cooperation: Somaliland and the United States have opportunities to strengthen cooperation in maritime security, counterterrorism, investment and economic development.

4. Regional Stability: Somaliland can serve as a valuable partner in promoting stability, protecting trade routes and strengthening security cooperation in the Horn of Africa.

5. International Recognition: Somaliland’s strategic and economic importance should reinforce its historical and legal case for international recognition as an independent state.

4. SIO’s Message to the International Community

SIO firmly believes that Somaliland should not be viewed merely as a country seeking recognition, but as a strategically important nation capable of making meaningful contributions to regional security, international trade and stability in the Red Sea.

We once again congratulate and commend Ambassador Bashir Goth and Ambassador J. Peter Pham for their valuable contributions to bringing Somaliland’s case before an important international audience.

Somaliland needs proactive diplomacy, credible research, strategic partnerships and international friends who understand its historical, legal and political realities.
