Somaliland President Attends MEAD Summit as US, Israel Navigate Regional Challenges
USA, Washington, (SomaliReport) – The fourth MEAD Summit opened in Washington on Tuesday, bringing together representatives from 24 countries for two days of discussions on Iran, Gaza, Lebanon and regional security.
The September 8–9 gathering comes amid continued uncertainty over the conflict with Iran and its regional repercussions. Discussions are focusing on unresolved issues including shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the situation in Lebanon, efforts to reach an agreement in Gaza and the future of Iran’s nuclear programme.
Participants are also expected to discuss possible new regional security frameworks, energy security and the protection of vital shipping routes.
The summit has attracted representatives from 12 Middle Eastern countries, including several that do not maintain diplomatic relations with Israel. Organisers say this year’s gathering has the broadest participation since the summit was established four years ago.
Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro) is also attending the conference, adding a Somaliland presence to the high-level regional discussions.
The closed-door forum brings together senior policymakers, government officials and security figures from the United States, Israel and countries across the region.
